EV holiday in Norway

Norway has more than 10,000 rapid chargers, and electric cars are the norm. You just need to sort out road tolls and allow for hills and cold.

Getting there

Ferries sail from Hirtshals to Kristiansand, Larvik, Stavanger and Bergen, from Frederikshavn to Oslo and from Copenhagen to Oslo. You can also drive through Sweden and over Svinesund. Charge up before you board. Read about the crossing in ferries and bridges.

Charging networks

Tesla, Recharge, Eviny, Circle K, Mer, Uno-X and IONITY have many rapid chargers. Eviny and Mer have agreed to merge, but the Norwegian competition authority is investigating the deal (October 2026). In the EV association's 2026 survey, drivers were most satisfied with Tesla, Uno-X and Circle K. See more in EV charging networks in Europe.

Road tolls

Many roads in Norway have tolls. Cameras read the number plate, and the bill goes to the car's owner. Register the car for free with EPASS24 before you go. That way you avoid a fee for tracing the owner. Electric cars can get a discount, but only with an AutoPASS agreement and a tag on the windscreen. You cannot get the tag at the border, so order it well in advance.

Speed

The limit is 50 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on country roads. On motorways it is 90 or 100 km/h as signposted.

Hills and winter

Going up into the mountains uses a lot of electricity, and you get some back on the way down. Winter tyres are not mandatory, but if you drive on summer tyres in winter, you must carry snow chains when there is snow or ice. Studded tyres are allowed from 1 November to the first Sunday after Easter. Read also ski holiday.
