EV range and charging in winter
In winter, an electric car goes less far and charges more slowly. That is completely normal, and there is a lot you can do about it.
Why range drops
The battery and the cabin have to be heated, and a cold battery works more slowly. Expect 10–30% less range in freezing weather. Mostly on short trips, where the car has to warm up again and again. A heat pump in the car helps a lot.
Warm up the car while it charges
Warm up the car from the app while it is still plugged in. Then the power comes from the grid and not from the battery. You drive off with a warm cabin and a full battery.
Rapid charging is slower
A cold battery cannot accept full power. Many cars warm up the battery when you navigate to a rapid charger using the car's own navigation. That can save you many minutes at the charger.
