Home EV charger: buy, rent or subscription

A home charger is the cheapest way to charge. But there are big differences in how you pay for it.

Buying

You pay for the charger and the installation once and choose your own electricity deal. Over a few years this is usually cheapest, especially if you charge at night on an hourly spot-price deal. Some providers charge a small monthly service fee.

Renting

You pay nothing up front, but a fixed price every month. Often you must also take the provider's electricity deal, and there is usually a 6-month minimum term. Renting suits you if you do not want to tie up money in a charger, or if you expect to move within a few years.

Subscription with electricity

You pay a fixed monthly price for the charger and the electricity, often with a bundle of kWh or unlimited charging at home. It is simple, but usually only pays off if you drive a lot. Some subscriptions are not offered to homes with electric heating or solar panels.

How to choose

If you drive under 15,000 km a year, buying or renting with a spot-price deal is almost always cheapest.
Charge at night. That matters more for the price than your choice of provider.
