EV charging glossary: kW, kWh and more
Electric cars have their own language. Here are the words you will come across most often.
Answer three questions. We work through every way of paying for charging in Denmark: pay-as-you-go, subscription and all inclusive, at home, on the street and at rapid chargers. You get the yearly cost and can see at how many kilometres another option becomes cheapest.
Ordinary chargers (11–22 kW) on the street, in car parks and at shops. The car stays there for a few hours.
The Danish electricity tax (elafgift) has been cut to almost zero in 2026 and 2027. From 2028 it rises again by about 0.90 DKK/kWh incl. VAT. That does not apply to electricity you charge through a home charger with a tax refund (until the end of 2030).
Eloverblik is Energinet's portal for your own electricity data. With it we look up your grid company, electric heating, solar panels and your EV charging instead of guessing.
Your data stays with you. Your browser fetches the figures directly from Energinet; they are not sent to us and are not stored. The token is forgotten when you close the page. You can delete the token again on eloverblik.dk under API-adgang.

The price without a subscription (pay-as-you-go, called ad hoc in Denmark), converted to one price per kWh for a 40 kWh charge so you can compare. The figure is the median of the provider's rapid chargers (50 kW and up).
The DKK column is the price for 40 kWh. Prices come from the operators' AFIR data (the EU rules that require open charging data) at Dataudveksleren, Denmark's national access point; where the feed has no price, we use the rate the operator publishes. The price shown on the charger applies.
The bar shows the range from the cheapest to the most expensive charger, the dot the median.

In Denmark, electricity at home is the spot price, your local grid company's tariff (nettarif), the tariffs of Energinet (the national grid operator), electricity tax (elafgift) and 25% VAT. The grid tariff is lowest at night, and the electricity tax has been cut to 0.8 øre (0.008 DKK) per kWh in 2026 and 2027.
Your address determines the grid company. The price guide looks it up, and with a token from Eloverblik it can use your own meter data. The data is fetched directly in your browser and is not sent to us.

Choose a size and tell us how much you drive and what the car needs to do. You get the EVs that fit, with range, charging time and cost per year. At the bottom you can see what it costs compared with a petrol, diesel or hybrid car of the same size. Prices are Danish list prices.
